Empowering communities to develop solutions for the peaceful coexistence of people and wildlife in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo.
Through long-term research, cross-sectoral partnerships and practical conservation actions, Hutan is committed to reconciling the conservation of Sabah's rich natural heritage with the needs and aspirations of local people.
Who We Are
Hutan is a grassroots research and conservation organisation established in 1998 in the Kinabatangan floodplain of Eastern Sabah. Over the years, we have built a team of over a hundred staff from the indigenous Orang Sungai community, working with remarkable dedication and expertise to safeguard their natural heritage.
What We Do
From long-term biodiversity research and monitoring to habitat protection and restoration, environmental education and conservation planning, Hutan works to preserve wildlife and ecosystems across the Kinabatangan landscape and beyond. Our holistic approach integrates science, stakeholder engagement and locally rooted conservation solutions.
