In 2023, HUTAN's Wildlife Survey and Protection (WSP) Unit conducted several methods to assess biodiversity and evaluate soil health at several of the TRAIL plots located at Melanging Oil Palm Plantations (MOPP). We conducted this monitoring and assessment between March and December 2023.

The three habitat types that we investigated to create a baseline were 1) Riparian Reforestation plot along the Melangking River: planting of native trees under mature palms that are not harvested started in the Riparian Corridor in 2018, 2) Oil palm plantation at mature stage and newly planted as well, and 3) Agroforestry combined subsets of trial designs: these plots are a mix plantation of native trees and palms. The planting was done in late 2022 in a newly cleared area after the removal of all palms (second rotation of palms). Preliminary results are presented below. Overall, we recorded 48 species: nine mammals, 26 birds, a reptile, and 12 frog species.
